Bareknuckle Gentleman

Boxers are a recurring theme in my work, predominately bareknuckle boxers and pugilists from the 18th and 19th century. These characters in part are metaphor for how I see an aspect of myself in relation to the world. Boxers and artists I the live in parallel universes and have may similarities dispute the considerable different in there craft. Both operate in a world that shine a light on there own individual performance and are driven by a need to succeed and to be acknowledge and recognised for who they are.

The black boxers of the 18th century were usually a freed slave who used his athleticism and strength to fight his way to freedom.

The original has been sold to an avid collector in USA.
