The Black Madonna of Częstochowa, also known as Our Lady of Częstochowa, is a venerated icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary housed at the Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa, Poland. The term Black Madonna or Black Virgin tends to refer to statues or paintings in Western Christendom of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus, where both figures are depicted as black. The Black Madonna can be found both in Catholic and Orthodox countriesThe paintings are usually icons which are Byzantine in origin or style, some of which were produced in 13th- or 14th-century ItalyThere are about 400–500 Black Madonnas in Europe, depending on how they are classified.
This painting is from a body work of Black Madonnas on wood and paintings. The Black Madonna for me is a symbol of the the Matriarch Black Mother who is a the core of the Caribbean family and conveys a symbol of strength and serenity.
By painting on a oak off cut this is a nod the traditional painting of icons from the Renassciance period of 14th and 15th century.
